Team news and form
Torreense became the first non top-flight side to win a game in the current Europa League format with a 2-1 victory in Norway last month, but they are struggling in the Portuguese second tier (W1, D3, L2) and are yet to win at home this season (D2, L1). Their stadium does not meet UEFA standards, so this match is played in Leiria, nearly 100km north of their home ground. They have also picked up three second-half red cards across their last two competitive games.
Sunderland sit close to the Premier League relegation zone after a 2-0 home defeat to ten-man Brighton, their third league loss in a row, which makes this European trip a welcome change for Régis Le Bris. Cup competitions have been kinder (they have advanced in the League Cup and won their Europa League opener 1-0 over AZ Alkmaar), but both wins were at the Stadium of Light. Away from home they have taken one point from three games and have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last eight road matches.
Manuel Pozo has scored twice this season across all competitions, both away from home after half-time and each with a booking. Enzo Le Fée has two goals and three assists in Sunderland’s last six away games, but they have won only one of those games when he contributed. Nuha Jatta is suspended for Torreense, while Sunderland have doubts over Thomas Meunier and Brian Brobbey.
Head-to-head – Previous meetings
- No previous meetings – this is the first Torreense vs Sunderland tie
Two of Sunderland’s five all-time European games were against Portuguese opposition: they lost 2-0 away to Sporting in the 1973/74 Cup Winners’ Cup after winning the home leg 2-1.
Why we’re backing it
Sunderland win narrow. Eight of their last nine competitive victories came by a single goal, their opening Europa League win was 1-0, and their only Premier League win this season was also 1-0. Torreense have failed to score in two of their last three games and only one of their last five matches saw both teams score, so a tight 1-0 or 2-1 is the most likely shape.
The risk is a red card or two. Torreense have collected three second-half red cards in their last two games, and if they go down to ten men Sunderland could stretch the margin. Sunderland’s own away record is poor, as all of their last seven road games saw both teams score and they have no clean sheet in eight, so Torreense can get on the scoresheet. That is why we prefer the exact one-goal margin to a win to nil.
