Team news and form
Stuttgart conceded late in Saturday’s 1-0 Bundesliga defeat at Hamburg, a frustrating way to prepare for this game. They have won both of their Champions League matches so far, scoring three times in each, and are chasing back-to-back home wins in the competition for the first time since 2003/04. Viking and Slovan Bratislava were far easier opponents than Atlético, though. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side have won six of their last nine major European home games (L3) and six of their last seven league-phase games in European competition.
Atlético, on the other hand, were helped by a late goal in a 1-0 win over Espanyol, their sixth consecutive win in all competitions. Their Champions League start has been mixed, a 2-1 loss at Liverpool followed by a 2-0 home win over Manchester United, and defensive issues remain, especially on the road. They last kept clean sheets in back-to-back Champions League games in February 2020, 64 games ago, and have only two clean sheets in their last 23 away group-stage and league-phase games. Their last six Champions League away trips brought one win (D2, L3).
Ermedin Demirović has four Champions League goals this season, already the most by a Stuttgart player in a single European Cup or Champions League campaign. Four of his five goals in all competitions this term came at home, and the last three of those were in the first half. Álex Baena scored against Espanyol, his third goal after the 80th minute from five this season. Stuttgart have several doubts, including Maximilian Mittelstädt and Tiago Tomás, while Atlético were without Johnny Cardoso (illness) and Koke (injury) at the weekend.
Head-to-head – Last Meetings
Stuttgart and Atlético have never met before. Neither side has a happy history against the other’s country: Stuttgart have won none of their last seven Champions League games against Spanish opponents (D2, L5), and Atlético have lost their last five away Champions League games against German clubs.
Why we’re backing it
Atlético arrive on a six-match winning run and with more attacking quality than Stuttgart have faced so far. Four of their last five competitive away games produced exactly three goals, and Stuttgart’s side have been vulnerable late on, with a goal after the 80th minute in each of their last three games.
Atlético’s record on the road in Europe is the risk, which is why the price is a fair 2.17 rather than short. Stuttgart’s run against Spanish teams and their step up in opposition make backing the visitors the better value over the draw or a home win.
